Poetry Society - Madrid Stanza

Next meeting: Tuesday, June 12th, 2012

The Madrid Stanza of the Poetry Society is one face of the (re-formed) Madrid Poets, a group whose roots reach back to the Nineties. We have close links with the Madrid Writers' Critique Group, but felt we needed a space where we could focus more specifically on poetry.

We meet once a month on the second Tuesday evening, although additional meetings can be scheduled according to availability of members or visitors to the city.

Meetings are held from 8pm at the Café Ruiz on Calle Ruiz, (Metro Bilbao/San Bernardo). There is no charge, but it is usual to buy drinks from the bar. The Ruiz is a traditional Spanish bar that serves all kinds of alcoholic drinks and teas and coffees, but other than gateau-style cakes, there is no food available. Meetings have been known to continue until the wee small hours, although we often adjourn to join the Madrid Writers' Critique Group around the corner at the Isadora Café after 10:30 or 11pm.

Comment and criticism of works in progress is one of the group's main functions, but we also hope to look at publications, events and competitions, and discuss other poetry-related issues.

We are a small group – seldom more than half a dozen – but our writing includes light verse, formal and free verse. Some of us are published (mostly in small press and anthologies) and some are used to performing at open mikes and readings.

Most of the group count English as their mother tongue, but some have lived in Spain for many years and we have Spanish members, too. Since Madrid is a temporary home to English speakers from many countries, we expect to have a turnover of membership and we welcome temporary residents and occasional visitors. If you are planning to be in Madrid, feel free to let us know and we may be able to convene an 'extraordinary' meeting.
